A search enginge war is coming. This year, promising better and personalized results, but:

And well well well… a new engine, a dutch engine. Izito with a dramatic layout. The results are in flash. Yeah, flash. They say: “Izito is a smart searchengine with a rich user interface that makes searching easier.” And opening links in a new tab impossible while at the same time distorting the expected back-button behaviour.

This engine might deliver very good results – actually my first impression is quite positive-, but I’m afraid that with the current user interface a lot of people will never find out. I have two words of advice for the creators: “Usability Testing”

stampHoe vaak je dan toch nog even gaat kijken bij die uitgestorven bende die Sargasso heet. Het kon even niet anders dan er een tijdje tussenuit gaan, even afkoelen even geen gezeik en niet opletten of het allemaal goed gaat, maar je merkt wel dat een weblog je enorm bezighoudt, ook al schrijf je niet eens dagelijks wat.

En ter overpeinzing van alle ontstane commotie een fraai stukje leesvoer over vertrouwen en identiteit op internet

Dat mocht eens tijd worden, want het CWI en UWV hebben geen kennis van zaken en zijn uitsluitend bureaucratische organisaties die het op tijd insturen van werkbriefjes belangrijker vinden dan dat je je kansen op werk vergroot. Maar met mensen aan werk helpen heeft het maar weinig te maken…

Ik heb zelf ervaring opgedaan met het CWI en UWV en die mensen vinden het belangrijker dat je administratief gezien 40 uu beschikbaar bent (lees: op de bank zit) dan dat je vrijwilligerswerk doet waarmee je je kansen op werk vergroot. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens over het feit dat de mensen bij het CWI geen enkele kennis van ICT hebben en dus onmogelijk iets zinnigers kunnen doen dan een beetje kritiek op je sollicitatiebrieven leveren en roepen dat het wel gaat lukken.

There is a very strange weblog culture in the Netherlands, where a lot -and I mean a lot– of blog-readers think they’re entitled to ventilate their opinion no matter what. So telling a blog author that his website sucks, that his articles suck and that he deserves a shot in the neck seems a normal way of reacting to writings of someone else.

So moderate your comments you’d probably say? Well yes and no. Of course one doesn’t want to publish negative crap on one’s own website, but those ‘guests’ think that you are actually limiting their freedom of speech by moderating or deleting their vicious comments. And calling some friends to post some additional comments -sometimes a lot of comments- has been done as well. Those people might not realize that starting their own weblog might be the best shot they have at freedom of speech the way they like it.

I think that it is all about respect for the author and his writings, and not wether you agree or not. Disagreement may lead to some nice discussions that might very well be very entertaining and educational. Purely negative comments definately will not.

Deleting comments is a risk, also because some may interpret is as censorship. You need a site disclamer that they agree to as soon as they press that publish button. I read a nice one @ Seriocomic.
